World Game Cup 2012 – Cannes, France – 17th-19th February

The fifth annual World Game Cup is kicking off next month in France. While it’s a little further afield than our usual tournament announcements, many Irish players have travelled to this event in the past (Doctor DooM took top 8 in MvC3 last year) and our largest entourage yet is making the trip this year.

With team and solo tournaments in Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition Version 2012, Soulcalibur V, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, King of Fighters XIII, Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike Online Edition, Blazblue Continuum Shift Extend, The King Of Fighters 2002 UM and Mortal Kombat plus extra side events in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Street Fighter X Tekken this is shaping up to be a massive event.
For more spice, several world class players from Japan will also be making their way to the event, including Tokido, Mago, Kindevu and EVO World Champion Fuudo.

Registration is closing soon so head over to the World Games Cup website for more info.

Also be sure to check out our forums to discuss your travel plans with the rest of the Irish heading over.

Street Fighter X Tekken – New Gems Details

Everyone’s favourite, slightly bizarre, online show dedicated to the upcoming Street Fighter X Tekken, X The Line has demonstrated some new details about the gem system.

The Gems that come with the game are broken down into 5 assist class gems and 52 Boost Class gems. At least that was my understanding, DLC and pre-order bonuses be confusing. Full list of Standard gems. American pre order bonus gems lists.

Essentially the assist class included super easy modes and auto block type gems. Super easy being a non perishable gem with a 10% damage cost and limiting available moves, lasting the game, and Auto-block type bringing a 1/3 Cross-art gauge penalty for each use.

In other words, probably useless to competitive play.

Boost gems on the other hand are perishable and after activation last between 10 to 20 seconds. Giving speed, defence, attack, cross gauge boosts etc. of 10-30%. Stacking similarly activated gems will result in a synchronous activation

Interestingly gems can be unequiped. Useless online, but could that become de-facto tournament standard? Though that would assume the game becomes a tournament stalwart itself…

Street Fighter X Tekken: Divine Speed Gem

A Soviet powerhouse using more performance enhancers than Ivan Drago?

Meet Speedgief. Though the green flashing his skin now sports will surely attract more bears, this will probably only help Zangief during his winter training season. It’s more efficient this way.

Ono: Totally new netcode in Street Fighter X Tekken.

Well, this news could really go either way, Gematsu.com have published an interview with Ono where he reveals that the Netcode being used in SFxT is from neither Super Street Fighter IV nor Ultimate Marvel versus Capcom 3, but a new piece of fresh, dedicated code.

Is Street Fighter X Tekken running on new or updated netcode? And is it being shared with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3?

Street Fighter X Tekken is using a new, different netcode than the Street Fighter IV series. I hope to demonstrate the specifics of it to everyone at a later date. This new netcode is not being used in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

I’m personally of the opinion that the net code in SSFIV is actually pretty decent when played over a good connection to a  fairly local opponent, it certainly doesn’t suffer the crippling lag often present in Vanilla MvC3, nor the constant rollbacks of 3rd Strike Online Edition or HD Remix.

Will Capcom get it right, will they have full lobby options and spectator mode at launch? Tell us below what you think.

All that glitters is not gold… – Sabre0001′s thoughts on Gems.

Our own Sabre0001, the beating heart at the centre of the Limerick fighting game scene has posted a musing on the gems system over on his esports blog, for your enjoyment it’s reproduced here, but don’t forget to visit his site for more:

Street Fighter X Tekken (SFxT) has received a lot of press and a lot of promotion of late, though not always for the right reasons. The latest announcement is an unusual one – a gem system. Essentially, this allows people to customise and tailor characters to suit their playstyle. On the surface, it sounds interesting and beneficial. However, when some of the gems are detailed, a few eyebrows may be raised…

SFxT – Three New Characters enter the ring!

Clue is in the hand

Clue is in the hand

But the question now is “who?”

Capcom as always are teasing us with their increasingly trolly tricky teasers vids. Super close ups of minor details of character models and stages and with a few red herrings thrown in for good measure, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ono makes the vids personally.

Cappers are going to be showing off the new fighters at the Brazil Game Show, so we won’t have long to wait and wonder, so lets get to the speculation as soon as we can!

The three vids and my guesses are found after the break, but who do you think they are?
