The Irish anime convention circuit started this last weekend with Akumakon in Galway, and as is now the standard for all Irish conventions, there were plenty of fighting game tournaments on show. This was Akumakon’s second year running and it was a pretty hefty improvement over last year, however that’s not to say everything went entirely smoothly.
There were tournaments scheduled across the weekend for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition v2012, Blazblue Continuum Shift 2 and a retro tournament for Marvel vs Capcom 2 on Dreamcast. Unfortunately there was some technical difficulties tuning the Dreamcast into the TVs and the MvC2 tournament was replaced with an Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 event instead.
Ireland’s longest running fighting game tournament is finally back after a Christmas break. As with last month, in addition to the usual Super Street Fighter 4 tournament, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 will be represented. Also note that this will be the first proper Irish tournament to feature Arcade Edition Version 2012 – so I hope you’re all up to speed on this latest balance update.
Make your way to the Exchange in Temple Bar, Dublin on February 4th to take part. Doors open at 10:00 and registration starts at 11:00. These tournaments will be seeded based on the three previous tournaments Please bring your own controller or converter.

Cork’s Street Fighter 4 tournament season is finally starting back up after a brief holiday where you all were hopefully ignoring your families while you trained up SSFIV Arcade Edition Version 2012.
The NewPort Cafe Bar on Paul’s Street will be host to this terminal event as usual. The venue will open for casuals and registration from 12:00 and the SSFIV tournament will start at 13:00 sharp.

The fifth annual World Game Cup is kicking off next month in France. While it’s a little further afield than our usual tournament announcements, many Irish players have travelled to this event in the past (Doctor DooM took top 8 in MvC3 last year) and our largest entourage yet is making the trip this year.
With team and solo tournaments in Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition Version 2012, Soulcalibur V, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, King of Fighters XIII, Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike Online Edition, Blazblue Continuum Shift Extend, The King Of Fighters 2002 UM and Mortal Kombat plus extra side events in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Street Fighter X Tekken this is shaping up to be a massive event.
For more spice, several world class players from Japan will also be making their way to the event, including Tokido, Mago, Kindevu and EVO World Champion Fuudo.
Registration is closing soon so head over to the World Games Cup website for more info.
Also be sure to check out our forums to discuss your travel plans with the rest of the Irish heading over.
Akumakon is starting off the anime convention season in Ireland bright and early this year. This is the National University of Ireland, Galway’s second year running an anime convention and their Games Room is fully stocked with fighting game tournaments.
Spread across the weekend there’s going to be tournaments in Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition, Blazblue Continuum Shift 2, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and a retro tournament for Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the Dreamcast.
Our illustrious Latavrian dictator/media guru has bestowed upon us an early Christmas gift: A list of things he wants. Gather round as he lists a few of the more obscure character choices he demands make it into UMvC3 next year.
I’ve been a Marvel fan for a long time, although in recent years I haven’t been able to keep up with them like I did. With the release of UMvC3, I got to thinking about the more… obscure characters I’d love to see in the game.
The rules I’ve set myself are pretty simple: I won’t pick a character that’s already been in a crossover series game. I wanted them to be the ones you’d never hear of if you weren’t a comic book fan, but who I do genuinely think would make good fodder for a Marvel game. So no Daredevil, War Machine or Venom here. There’s obviously no point in doing Capcom characters, as you wouldn’t be playing UMvC if you didn’t know anything about them!
